As part of Surrey Artists' Open Studios 2017, Rachel Mulligan and I made a stained glass Chinese dragon for the doors to her garden room. I had completed the design a year before and Rachel and I decided that Open Studios was the perfect time to realise the vision. Visitors were encouraged to get involved and scratch or paint their marks onto the dragon. We had 15 days in which to draw up the cut line, cut the glass, engrave, paint and fire each piece, lead, cement and finally glaze the 20 panels which make up the dragon. Despite the soaring June temperatures, we managed to complete the project and also make a time-lapse film of the process, which you can watch at the end of this post.
